Wit & Wisdom Fellows are a group of outstanding educators selected to work in collaboration with the Wit & Wisdom professional development team with the goal of facilitating Wit & Wisdom's in-person PD sessions. After completing a training regimen, Fellows support local and national implementation of Wit & Wisdom, traveling to assist users around the country or virtually, and working via a job-sharing arrangement for both their local district and Great Minds—the nonprofit organization that created Wit & Wisdom. The term of the fellowship is one year.

We are now accepting applications for the fourth cohort of Wit & Wisdom Fellows. The entry deadline is December 11, 2020.



Who should apply?

Outstanding Wit & Wisdom teachers, instructional coaches, and ELA curriculum specialists who demonstrate the following are encouraged to apply:

  • Have a passion for teaching Wit & Wisdom
  • Use Wit & Wisdom as the primary curriculum in their school or district
  • Want to expand their knowledge of the Wit & Wisdom curriculum
  • Enjoy working with educators, and have experience with PD facilitation
  • Share the belief that every child is capable of greatness, and have an interest in collaborating with educators to act on this belief
  • Encourage productive struggle in the classroom, amongst both colleagues and students
  • Have a commitment to knowledge-building, and an orientation around rich text study as the context for skill-building
  • Share the principles that guide Wit & Wisdom's approach to PD
  • Want to facilitate Wit & Wisdom PD sessions in their own districts and across the country while still working with their home school or district via a job-sharing arrangement
  • Have availability to deliver Wit & Wisdom PD for a minimum of ten days between June 1 and August 30, 2021 (for additional compensation), in addition to the job-sharing agreement during the 2021–2022 school year.

What goals guide Wit & Wisdom's approach to professional development?

The Wit & Wisdom team works directly with teachers in sessions delivered at different phases of implementation. Wit & Wisdom’s Professional Development sessions

  • emphasize experiential knowledge-building,
  • engage participants as trusted colleagues,
  • reinforce the joyful rigor of engaging with complex texts,
  • amplify specific components of the curriculum,
  • drive inquiry,
  • integrate differentiation, and
  • deliver practical methods and strategies.

What is the cost for applicants/host districts?

There is no cost to the individual, as Great Minds covers all training costs. Each Fellow's home school/district grants release time for the training sessions.

What is the timeline for becoming a Wit & Wisdom Fellow?

December 11, 2020 – Application deadline

January 20, 2021 – Selection of prospective Fellows

March 12-15, 2021 – Part I of In-person and/or Virtual Facilitator Training

April 23-26, 2021 – Part II of In-person and/or Facilitator Training

May 2021 – Begin delivering PD based on a Fellow’s end of school year

Which grade levels will be supported by Wit & Wisdom Fellows?

Individuals experienced in teaching Wit & Wisdom at any grade level (K–8) are welcome to apply. In addition to lead classroom teachers, educators with experience in Special Education, ESL, instructional coaching, and leadership are all strongly encouraged to apply.

How many Fellows will be selected to join the cohort?

Between 15 and 30 Fellows from across the United States will be selected to join our fourth cohort of facilitators.

What is the training process to become a Fellow?

Selected applicants will participate in a virtual webinar meeting in February and March 2021 and attend two required three-day virtual/in-person trainings in the spring of 2021. The two in-person and/or virtual training events are mandatory for all prospective Fellows. In addition to training, all facilitators are required to deliver selected PD session material as the final requirement prior to facilitating PD independently as a Fellow.

How are Fellows compensated for their work?

Fellows will deliver PD sessions during Summer 2021 and during the 2021–2022 school year. Fellows are paid a daily rate of $1200 for each session delivered during the summer and during school holidays. This stipend covers preparation, travel time (if necessary), and PD delivery. During the school year, Fellows work for Great Minds according to the details of their job-share contract.

How much travel is expected of a Fellow?

At this point, all of our PD is being delivered virtually. The amount of travel in the 21-22 school year will depend on specific public health recommendations and national and state travel restrictions. Potential travel will also depend on the specific job-share agreement between Great Minds and the home school or district of the Fellow. For example, if one has an 80 percent: 20 percent job-share agreement with Great Minds, then over a two-week period, one could expect to work in one’s home school or district eight days and with Wit & Wisdom two consecutive days during the period. This would translate to facilitating two PD sessions per month.

If the circumstances surrounding Covid change and travel is permitted, the specifics regarding travel depend on the demand for PD, but Fellows may expect to travel outside of their district and state. Travel time will be compensated, and every effort will be made to ensure this is manageable with local school and personal responsibilities.

Why become a Fellow?

Fellows will have the opportunity to do the following:

  • Deepen their expertise of the Wit & Wisdom curriculum while receiving training and coaching from Wit & Wisdom writers and facilitators to deliver PD sessions.
  • Broaden their perspective on English Language Arts education by traveling and collaborating with teachers and ELA professionals across the country.
  • Extend their networks of professional learning as they share experiences and best practices with the Wit & Wisdom team and other ELA professionals with whom they interact as Fellows.

How will a school/district benefit from having a Fellow on staff?

The school or district will develop internal capacity and expertise to support ongoing implementation of Wit & Wisdom.

Fellows will be able to provide Wit & Wisdom PD sessions at no cost to their home districts as often as the district needs.

Fellows will have extensive opportunities to expand their network of Wit & Wisdom implementers, giving their school and/or district access to that network and additional support.

Great Minds will fund a portion of the salary and benefits of the Fellow during the course of the fellowship in a job-share agreement. The amount funded is determined by the amount of time dedicated to facilitating Wit & Wisdom PD during the school year.

How will Fellows be selected?

Throughout the application and training process, prospective Fellows will be evaluated on their content knowledge, understanding of Wit & Wisdom, and facilitation skills. To become a Fellow, educators will need to demonstrate a clear grasp of the curriculum’s learning design, concise communication, and responsiveness to the needs of peers/participants. The ability to maintain the integrity of the curriculum coupled with a collegial approach is an essential balance to hold in order to be a Fellow.

What are the physical requirements for a Fellow?

In the course of delivering professional development, all Fellows must be able to:

  • Lift 40 lbs,
  • Lift and distribute the materials associated with the session,
  • Stand for long periods of time.
