Role Overview

The Senior Trade Book Buyer is responsible for building and maintaining numerous trade book publisher relationships, as well as implementing purchasing strategies. This role will report into the Director Supply Chain Kit/Print Operations and work closely with the Demand Planning, Sales, and Finance teams to ensure that the right quantity of trade titles is available for sale in the current school year. This role requires a strong understanding of quantitative demand planning, profit and loss management, risk mitigation strategies and expert knowledge of the vendors in this space. A key area of focus for this role is to develop and execute specific planning strategies for trade books.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain relationships with 15+ trade book publishers, and on-board new publishers as needed.
  • Develop and implement purchasing strategies through relationships with book publishers and deep knowledge of their supply chains.
  • Analyze inventory and sales. Formulate plans to handle upside and stock outage scenarios.
  • Standardize regular reporting of purchasing and supply chain activity using decision-informing metrics.
  • Forecast and communicate purchasing strategy to align with budget. Manage open-to-buy spend and hit financial goals.
  • Create and implement strategies for consistent sourcing of core texts to address sales fluctuations.
  • Understand key purchasing terms and conditions (e.g., lead times, discount structure, payment timing).
  • Work cross-departmentally with multiple curriculum product teams to create individual purchase strategies.
  • Create and implement strategies to consistently purchase titles at the most favorable terms.
  • Qualify vendors, evaluates bids, and negotiates prices and terms for purchased goods and services.
  • Track purchases, monitor vendor quality, and maintain a current database of vendor information.
  • Maintain 650+ titles and communicate changes related to ISBN’s, pricing and out of print status.
  • Manage stock reserve programs with key distributors and adjust to demand changes.
  • Manage and initiate contracts and documents related to trade business.


Job requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 4-7 years of experience creating and implementing purchasing strategies
  • Experience developing and implementing purchasing strategies based on deep knowledge of vendors’ supply chains
  • Experience building and implementing a variety of plans to meet strategic needs, including contingency plans and end-to-end plans
  • Experience assembling and implementing quantitative measurement systems for evaluating vendors
  • Experience building reports based on supply chain and purchasing metrics
  • Experience purchasing and developing strategies for the purchasing of eBooks
  • Experience qualifying vendors, evaluating bids, and negotiating prices and terms for purchased goods and services
  • Experience tracking purchases, monitoring vendor quality, and maintaining a current database of vendor information

The base salary range for this position is $80,000 - $89,000, however the offered salary may be higher or lower than the above range dependent on numerous factors including, but not limited to location, work experience, skills and internal equity considerations.. The base salary is not inclusive of benefits or other incentives.
