Core Responsibilities

  • Act as in-house, corporate counsel overseeing all privacy/data security compliance (FTC, FERPA, COPPA, CCPA, GDPR, etc.)
  • Develop, implement, and manage a strategic and comprehensive enterprise-wide privacy and data security program that enables consistent, effective privacy practices which minimize risk and ensure the confidentiality of protected information across the organization
  • Manage copyrights and trademarks alongside enforcement and litigation related thereto
  • Lead training and awareness efforts as needed and/or required to increase employee understanding of privacy policies, data handling practices, and legal obligations
  • Monitor emerging privacy concerns and/or threats, respond to legislative changes through regular reviews and revisions of privacy policies and internal processes, and advise relevant stakeholders on appropriate courses of action
  • Negotiate, draft and review the data privacy and security aspects of contracts with internal and external business partners to effectively manage and mitigate privacy risks via contract terms and conditions across a wide spectrum of clients and vendors, develop standard provisions, and escalation processes
  • Oversee legal compliance of the company’s social media presence
  • Oversee legal compliance of online marketing and advertising initiatives
  • Participate in Legal department initiatives

Requirements

• Minimum of 2-5 years of in-house or law firm corporate counseling

• Experience overseeing privacy/data security compliance (FTC, FERPA, COPPA, CCPA, GDPR, etc.)

• Experience managing copyrights and trademarks

• Experience handling a wide range of technology/platform vendor agreements, licensing content/product matters, strategic alliances, NDAs, and related agreements

• Experience working with terms and policies for digital media publications in the educational market and related apps and learning platforms

• Experience working with online tutoring/mentoring offered to schools

Required Education/Credentials

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school

• Active membership in at least one state bar

• Currently remote

• Prefer ability to work in Washington D.C. or Maryland
