Job Purpose

Reporting to the General Counsel, the Senior Counsel-Privacy will play a key role in ensuring compliance with privacy laws that impact Great Minds as it serves our mission to K-12 students, teachers, and educational institutions. This role will provide strategic legal guidance on data privacy, security, and compliance, enabling the company to develop and deliver curriculum products while maintaining trust with schools, educators, districts, and families.


Responsibilities

  • Provide legal guidance on compliance with education-focused privacy laws, including FERPA, COPPA, SOPIPA, state student privacy laws, and applicable regulations.

  • Partner with product and business teams to ensure privacy principles are embedded into curriculum development and digital platforms.

  • Draft, review, and negotiate privacy and data security terms in contracts with schools, districts, vendors, and technology partners.

  • Develop and implement policies and best practices for handling student and educator data in compliance with legal and ethical standards.

  • Monitor and interpret emerging privacy laws and regulatory trends, advising leadership on their impact on K-12 education.

  • Conduct internal privacy risk assessments and develop frameworks for data governance, security, and incident response.

  • Provide training and guidance to internal teams on privacy compliance, data protection, and best practices for handling student and educator data.

Job requirements

Requirements

  • 7+ years’ experience advising on privacy laws, preferably in the education, technology, or curriculum development sectors

  • Deep knowledge of FERPA, COPPA, and state-specific student privacy laws, with an understanding of global privacy trends affecting K-12 institutions

  • Ability to balance compliance requirements with business needs, offering practical, risk-based guidance

  • Strong contract negotiation and drafting skills related to data privacy and security

  • Ability to work cross-functionally, influencing stakeholders in legal, product, technology, digital, and business teams

Required Education

J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership

The expected base salary range for this position is $155,000-$176,000, however the offered salary may be higher or lower than the above range dependent on numerous factors including, but not limited to location, work experience, skills and internal equity considerations. The base salary is not inclusive of benefits or other incentives.
