Position Summary

The Professional Development Manager, East, reports to the National Director, Professional Development, Humanities. The Professional Development Manager is responsible for ensuring that Great Minds’ facilitators and partners understand the philosophy, best practices, and foundations of Great Minds’ curricula.

Professional Development Manager will contribute to the Great Minds Humanities professional development strategy, including providing input on the content created to support facilitators; planning, conducting, and evaluating implementation of in-person and virtual professional development sessions; monitoring and management of team processes and communications; collaborating on creation of project/team guidelines and resources; coordinating meetings and schedules; and supporting cross-team communications. The Professional Development Manager is responsible for pro-active and effective management of the team of Great Minds Professional Development Facilitators, including our Wit & Wisdom Fellows.

This role is an exciting opportunity for a skilled coach or leader to implement and contribute to Great Mind’s organizational mission to create curriculum and resources that ensure all teachers are prepared to provide their students with a quality education in the full range of liberal arts and sciences.


Great Minds is headquartered in Washington, D.C., however many members of our team work remotely. The Professional Development Manager can work remotely.

Reports To

National Director, Professional Development, Humanities


  • The team gathers in person 1-2 times a year.
  • The Professional Development Manager may facilitate and/or attend professional development in the field and may travel approximately 30% of the time, depending on location
  • Manage and develop a team of Wit & Wisdom regional Fellows and full-time facilitators to successfully execute professional development for external partners

Core Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Team Coordination and Professional Development Facilitation

  • Work with Implementation Leads, Account Solutions Managers, and Professional Development Services team members to establish and implement regional plans, with a focus on professional development strategy, including protocols for preparation, debrief, addressing challenges, and coordination with Professional Development sites.
  • Facilitate Wit & Wisdom Professional Development.
  • Evaluate execution of professional development sessions according to their ability to improve practices of participants.
  • Manage team communications, resources, schedules, and work plans with a pro-active, problem-solving approach.
  • Collaborate within and across teams to provide input on the development of facilitator-support resources and professional development sessions.

Capacity Building
• Cultivate and maintain a strong and supportive Great Minds culture in all work environments, with an emphasis on trust, collegiality, curiosity, and quality.
• Promote and respond to requests for Great Minds’ professional development such that:
       o Effective adoption and implementation of the curricula is maximized
       o Great Minds strategic goals are prioritized
       o Decisions support efficient use of personnel and materials
       o The reputation of Great Minds is held in the highest regards
• Provide timely communication with National Director for Professional Development related to risks, feedback, and other matters relevant to Great Minds and its mission.
• Contribute to the development of a network of advocates for the mission of Great Minds.

Content Development

• Collaborate within and across teams to provide input on the development of facilitator-support resources and professional development sessions


Relevant Experience and Skills

  • Experience teaching and/or leading Wit & Wisdom
  • Experience delivering professional development
  • Experience managing a professional development program and/or PD facilitators
  • Deep content knowledge in English Language Arts with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in an associated content area
  • Superior communication skills
  • Minimum of 7-10 years teaching experience
  • Knowledge of the Common Core State Standards
